Gay Ibiza

As famous as it is mispronounced, Ibiza is the most storied and her-storic of all of the Spanish islands -- and that's saying a lot. Just one mention of it can invoke blurry nights and days of writhing bodies, sweltering sun, and deafening DJs. But the most edumacated among us also know that it's central to gay culture: It's been a queer mecca since before the days of Stonewall.

Of course, nowadays, the nightlife is mixed gay and straight because sexual orientation has become a non-issue on this island playground. Call it progress. But for those in the know, the gay events are mainly located in Ibiza Town, Dalt Vila, and the gay hub of the island, Figueretas. Visit Calle de la Virgen in the port area for a colorful, animated experience. Then find fetishists, hot guys, sexy go-go boys, elaborate drag queens, and wild clothing — or very little clothing at all — on the lively streets.

At the end of your first night (which may blend in with your second and third nights), you will find safe haven at several local hotels and resorts. While many folks on gaycation like to use private accommodation, there are some fabulous gay stays to be found here. But when you just need to relax, your best bet may be to kick back at one of Ibiza's many secluded (and gorgeous) beaches. Though much of Ibiza has been overtaken by development (thanks, in part, to the Pink Dollar, oops), the island is still at its heart a magnificent nature reserve. You can party all night and still revel in the sunrise.
